As physicians we have rich meaningful lives. We also have unique challenges daily. Many of us never have the opportunity to reflect and discuss these aspects of our lives with others who really understand us because they are living it too!

When we are in the company of other physicians the conversation often gets focused on the troubles, the politics, or the systems that block our healing practice.

Physician only Meaning in Medicine gatherings are a breath of fresh air and sunlight warms the soul. We are not alone in our experience of life and medicine and patients and family!

You may wonder "What makes this gathering of physicians so different from other gatherings?"

As with other experiences based in decades or centuries of history and tradition, Meaning in Medicine is based in a physician tradition almost 20 years in the making. A tradition founded by Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen, author of the best-selling books Kitchen Table Wisdom and My Grandfather's Blessings.

The foundation of this tradition is as simple as great wisdom often is. We each bring a story about the topic chosen for the evening. A story of our own, a story of someone who has moved us, or a paragraph/theme from literature that speaks to us regarding the topic (perhaps balance, or compassion, or joy, ect.). While physicians share their story the rest of us practice Generous Listening. Generous listening is different from general conversation. Instead of adding, responding, debating, challenging, or agreeing, we simply unjudgmentally listen as this is someone's personal truth they are placing on the table before us. Then, after everyone has placed a story on the table, only then do we discuss what this experience of generous listening and these personal truths means to us.

Although it is simple, it is experienced like a deep pause in the hectic pace of everyday demand. A meditation of self reflection validated by others who share our experience, an experience that renews the meaning of our life.
